When we were elected to Wellingborough Council we promised to get out and about all over the ward to hear what you have to say and see for ourselves the problems you face.

Since then people have raised many concerns with us. Crime and vandalism, the lighting switch off, the grass cutting, the state of the roads and the general state of Queensway Ward have all been a real worry to many people. We are working on all these problems and have decided to do a “walkabout” in your area to make sure we are picking up all your concerns.

We will be walking round the Stanwell Way, Pope Road, Scott Road, Clare Road and Shelley Road area from 10.00 to 12.00 this Saturday morning, 28th January. If you would like us to pop in and see you please call us on 222805 to fix a time or just stick this notice in your window and we will call in as we pass.

PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS‘ PENSIONS

Wellingborough Constituency Labour Party has agreed the following resolution in support of the struggle of public sector workers to defend their pensions:

Wellingborough Labour party notes that unions representing over three-quarters of a million public sector workers took industrial action against attacks on pensions on 30th June and that many other unions are balloting their members or have already agreed to take further co-ordinated strike action on 30th November.

The Hutton report shows that the current average public sector pension is worth about £5,600 a year on retirement, and that the cost of providing public sector pensions is falling.

Public sector pensions were neither responsible for the economic crash nor for the deficit we have today. We note, however, that the Government’s attack on public sector pensions is multi-faceted, including:

     Changing the basis of indexation to uprate pensions from the Retail Price Index (RPI) to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) with effect from April 2011. We note that this change has  reduced the lifetime value of public sector workers’ pensions by between 15 % and 20%;

      Increasing pension contributions by an average of 3.2% of salary from April 2012.  This represents an increase of approximately 50% in pensions contributions for many workers;

      Increasing the retirement age to 68;

      Reducing the accrual rate so that pension values rise more slowly.

We note that this will mean that public sector workers will work longer and pay more for a lower pension – 20% to 50% lower on average than their current pension.

We further recognise that an important motivation for reducing the value of public servants’ pensions is to make it easier to privatise public services. The attack on public service pensions is part and parcel of the Tories’ attack on the welfare state.

We are concerned that the Tories’ attacks on public sector pensions could provoke massive opting-out of pension schemes by low paid workers, worsening pensioner poverty and imposing a cost on the state a future pensioners claim means-tested benefits.

We note that the taxpayer picks up the tab for the failure of private sector employers to provide pensions through means-tested benefits, and that some in the private sector have very generous pensions. The average value of a FTSC 100 director’s pension was £3.4m in 2009. The failure of private pensions is the fault of employers not eh public sector.

We therefore call upon the Parliamentary Labour Party to pledge to reverse these Tory attacks upon public sector workers and their pensions. We pledge our support to the Trade Unions in their campaign to defend public service pensions and agree to join demonstrations and picket lines in support of any industrial action – and to consider inviting a trade union speaker to a future meeting.

NOTE – If you would like to contact the Wellingborough Labour Party, please contact Andrew Scarborough on < ?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = SKYPE ?> 01933 222 805 or by this website.

A rare second generation event occured last month when Corby & East Northants Labour PPC Andy Sawford attended the Supper Club.

Why second generation, his father Phil Sawford was Wellingborough PPC prior to winning for Labour in Kettering in 1992.

A full house heard Andrew Sawford speak on Friday at the Wellingborough Labour Party Supper Club. Andrew, the prospective Labour Party Candidate for the Corby Parliamentary seat in 2015 gave a wide ranging speech on many key issues that now face the UK.

Andy addresses the Supper Club

Besides the present financial situation, which is being made worse by the present coalition policies, he spoke about:

* £89bn cuts to local authorities that are affecting everyone especially the poor, disadvantaged and handicapped.

* The changes to our school system, based on the Tory cabinet experience of public schools. These changes mean that the haves gain and the have not’s lose. Not the way to achieve a more equal society

* The need to win in 2015 in order to save our NHS from irrevocable changes that cannot be changed.

* The concerns that the Corby electorate have about their present MP, Louise Mensch. Louise has a strong London based TV presence but none in her Corby constituency.

On a more personnel note Andrew explained his relationship with Wellingborough. Andrew can remember campaigning in Wellingborough as a young man in 1992. His father ,Phil Sawford ( Labour MP for Kettering 1997-2005) stood in 1992 in Wellingborough and Andrew Scarborough was his agent so he has many happy memories of Wellingborough and our Labour family.

The last point he made was that in order to win an overall majority in 2015 Labour has to win Corby and Northampton North .Andrew already has a game plan to achieve a win in Corby .Part of the plan is to clearly identify the Labour voters in Irthlingborough and Raunds. He will need help to do this and he asked Wellingborough CLP for help over the next few years from the people of Wellingborough. If you are prepared to help Andrew please contact him via email labourandy@gmail.com or via this web site
